Happy birthday man! Is it too late?

Sorry that I need something from you on or just one day after your birthday, but I have a couple questions:

1.) Remember what I asked you about plesiosaurs killing similar sized animals? Isn't there still a chance that they could still seriously injure animals in their size range on their own, even if that chance isn't particularly fat (especially if their cranial and dental properties are properly designed for engagement with larger animals)?

2.) I can't wait for your post about herbivorous dinosaur (namely macronarian, ornithopod, etc.) bites. When will that come up?

Thanks for birthday shout out!!

For 1) errr look it was probably a nasty bite, the real damage is from the body rolling as the teeth clamp shut. think of it like a titty twister from hell.

2) I recall talking about herbivorous bites with you but I'm sorry I don't have an upcoming post on the subject. Plenty of other stuff I have to do as it is...

Cheers!!

Regarding your latest post:

This darrennaish.blogspot.ca/2006/0…

Apparently male turkeys overheat more than females due to the greater area of naked skin....

Bald heads, wattles and caruncles in birds seem to arise in two cases: if the animal is an extensive soaring animal and therefore has to deal with rapid changes in temperature (vultures and some large storks-maybe soaring pterosaurs?), and if the sexual selection value for display features is so great it overrides the increased risk of heat stress (galliforms, ratites, etc). The latter option is always possible for things like oviraptorsaurs and small maniraptorans, but probably not for more predatory theropods (which have to balance stealth against standing out)

So IMHO, a crocodile-like wrinkled sheath of keratin over parts of the head (like what you suggested for abelisaurids) seems more likely than caruncled skin in terms of large theropod facial features.
